During the Ecological Field Studies Academy, you learn how to create a world-class field studies program at your school. Each day you hone your field studies expertise while working with experts who use these techniques in their own field work. Classroom sessions will cover simple statistical analysis, mapping, and the development of student research projects. You will practices these techniques while working at the CRC and at the National Zoo.
Smithsonian Conservation and Research Center, Front Royal, Virginia; Smithsonian National Zoological Park, Washington, D.C. Note that much of this Academy takes place outdoors and will require you to walk and work in the field under a variety of weather conditions.
Approximately 40 hours
Life science teachers (grades 6–12)
$1,700 covers course design, handbooks, course materials, accommodations at a local hotel, all meals, and transport to study locations. A discount of $500 is available if you choose not to stay in the academy hotel. (Front Royal is about 70 miles from Washington D.C.)
By completing this course, you will:
Improve your skills in observation of natural phenomena and recording of data;
Develop your understanding of key concepts that relate to biodiversity;
Improve your understanding and experience the nature of the work of scientists who study the diversity of life on our planet;
Enjoy special access to the scientific and educational resources of the Smithsonian Institution’s collections and scientists;
Experience and learn pedagogical techniques that facilitate a hands-on, inquiry approach in teaching; and
Form rich connections through dialogue and shared experiences with a cadre of life scientists and educators from across the country.
Three optional graduate credits will be available from Virginia Commonwealth University for an additional fee of $300.
